The Plastic Packaging “Avengers”

In a world where there is a vast amount of packaging needs and demands, one plastic bag cannot do it all. There needs to be a variety of plastic bags each with its own abilities and “superpowers”. In the plastic packaging industry the various plastic bags are our “Avengers.” When all of these plastic bags are available to the world there is no plastic packaging need that will go unfulfilled. The real Avengers were labeled “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” and this fits perfectly with plastic bags. The raw materials used to produce plastic bags are derived from ethane, a waste product in the oil and gas refining process. As a result, converting ethane into plastic actually reduces the number of greenhouse gas emissions compared to burning ethane as a waste product. So, without further interruption lets introduce the plastic bags that make up the heroes of the packaging world. Plastic Bags Assemble!!

Flat Bags (Captain America)

Flat plastic bags are the most commonly used poly bags and the one that all others look up to. The Captain America of plastic packaging is two dimensional and comes in a wide variety of sizes, styles, colors and thicknesses. Because of its versatility flat poly bags can package a wide array of products including: food, part kits, medical supplies and consumer goods. Flat poly bags can either be side or bottom seal depending on the various applications. Bottom seal flat poly bags are more leak proof and work perfect for liquid applications while side seal flat poly bags are used mostly for retail and smaller items. Flat plastic bags, just like Captain American, can be the perfect way to make any product stand out amongst the crowd.

Handle Bags and Poly Header Bags (Iron Man)

Handle plastic bags feature a handle at the top of the poly bag to assist consumers in carrying items. The Iron Man of plastic bags grabs the attention of any passerby like Tony Stark himself, with its ability to show colored designs and logos. Handle plastic bags are most commonly used for retail merchandise, tradeshows, carry-out products and special events. Handle plastic bags can have a multitude of styles including: draw card bags, draw tape bags, patch handle bags, rigid snap handle bags, fold over die cut bags and single layer die cut bags.

Poly Header Bags provide a separate section at the top of the poly header bag for a punch hole and/or printing which makes it ideal for hanging and rack display packaging. This separate section is perfect to put production information and company logos. The ability to add an optional punch hole allows the bag to hang for presentation on retail display racks, a Tony Stark recommendation. Poly header bags are bottom loaded and heat sealed closed for protection.

Liners (Incredible Hulk)

Liners represent the muscle and sheer strength in the plastic packaging dynamic. They protect containers or products from moisture and contaminates. They fit inside a box, case bin or drum. Liners are designed to provide protection during every stage of the production process. Liners can be custom made up to the 6 mil gauge which guarantees strength and durability. Form fitting side gussets allow the liner to conform to the shape of any container. They can be used to store and transfer raw materials in Gaylord liners, bin liners and drum liner. Liners can also be used in the shipment of finished goods such as box liners. Unlike the Hulk, you want to see this plastic packaging angry.

Gusseted Bags (Thor)

Gusseted plastic bags are ideal for liners and retail display packaging due to their form fitting ability and strength.Gusseted plastic bags can be manufactured as either a side gusset or bottom gusset bag depending on the specific application. Side gusseted plastic bags fold along the side of the bag which creates a square/rectangle shape on the bottom. This shape is perfect for liners and small/light items for retail display. The fold creates a smaller face size for larger bags which makes it easier to handle and transport. Bottom gusseted plastic bags fold at the bottom which allows the opening to expand into a square shape. This expanded rectangular shape of the bag form fits to any product inside, which create a more aesthetic look for display packaging. Perfect for transporting Mjolnir, the square-headed gray war hammer Thor adores.

Wicket Bags and Quick Fill Bags (Hawkeye)

Equipped with Hawkeye’s accurate and quick tactics, wicket bags are individually cut bags used for automated speed loading on specialized packaging equipment. Open on one sidefor easy access, wicket bags may be blown open so products can easily be inserted to reduce handling time and increase production rates. A U-shaped metal wicket is inserted through two holes at the top lip to pack and hold the wicket bag together. Wicket bags can be printed on both sides in up to six colors to easily brand products on retail shelves.

Quick fill bags are pre-opened on one side which provide automated production processes and minimized labor costs. They are mainly used for automated speed loading on specialized packaging equipment. Printed quick fill bags are a great way to brand your products on retail shelves and can be customized with six printed colors on two sides.

Ziplock Bags and Adhesive Tape Poly Bags (Black Widow)

When products need that sexy, jaw-dropping look while remaining highly efficient they require the Black Widow of the plastic packaging world; ziplock and tape bags. A zipper at the top of the reclosable ziplock plastic bag provides an easy-to-open option that can be resealed multiple times. Reclosable ziplock bags are used for a variety of applications and can package: food products, consumer products, house wares, cosmetics laboratory samples, medical supplies, powders and industrial products. If the ziplock bag needs an increased level of security a tamper evident ziplock bag can be produced.

Adhesive Tape Poly Bags feature a strip of tape at the top of the bag fortemporary or manual sealing processes. They are used for applications requiring one-time or very few recloses. Tape bags provide an excellent alternative when heat sealing is not an option. Adhesive tape bags are often used for: high level of security and protection, transfer of products during production and in non-perishable consumer products. Highly customizable adhesive tape bags can be designed to meet a variety of packaging needs. The tape can be located on a lip or inside the bag and the tape bags can be printed in up to six colors on two sides.

Attention Shoppers: Do You Really Need That Plastic Bag?

“The plastic bag is an accepted part of Canada’s shopping culture, but it shouldn’t be. Every year we use over 9 billion plastic shopping bags in Canada. That’s 17,000 bags a minute.”

– Greener Footprints

Canadians use 9-15 billion plastic shopping bags every year

To get a feel for just how many bags that actually is, picture this: if we tied 9 billion bags together, they would circle the earth 55 times (Greener Footprints).

Holy Dinah!

Every year it’s estimated between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are used across the globe. Although they weren’t widely used until the 1980s, their impact has already been felt around the world.

A quick stroll through your neighbourhood can often reveal how pervasive plastic bags are when it comes to the problem of litter. Hanging from tree branches or tangled in hedges, plastic bags have become a depressing fixture in urban green spaces like parks, schoolyards, and sports fields. Such litter is not only unsightly; it can also contribute to major environmental issues.

Large buildups of discarded plastic bags can clog drainage systems and contribute to major floods. Such flooding caused widespread destruction in Bangladesh in 1988 and 1998. Manila has also been vulnerable to flooding as a result of plastic-bag clogged sewers. In 2009, more than 80% of the Philippines’ capital was submerged. Hundreds were killed and thousands more were left homeless when entire neighbourhoods were swept away.

Other aquatic chaos created by plastic bags has proven deadly to those who live in the water as well.

Approximately 100,000 whales, seals, turtles and other marine animals are killed each year by plastic bags, which can strangle their victims or cause them to starve to death, according to Planet Ark, an international environmental group. A dead gray whale that washed ashore in Seattle in 2010 was found to have more than 20 plastic bags in its stomach.

A 2012 University of British Columbia study found that 93 per cent of beached northern fulmars (migratory seabirds related to the albatross) had bellies full of plastic – a substantial increase from the last time they were tested, in 1980.

In fact, plastic packaging is accumulating so quickly, it’s expected to outnumber fish in the sea by 2050, according to a recent report by the World Economic Forum.

According to the David Suzuki Foundation, “Few plastic bags are recycled. Most are used for a short time to carry groceries, and then maybe re-used as garbage bags or to wrap dog poop before ending up in the landfill or the ocean. Some people argue that, because they make up about one per cent of the volume of waste in landfills, we shouldn’t worry. But one per cent of the massive amounts of what’s in landfills is a lot, especially since plastic doesn’t biodegrade.”

Most plastic bags are made from polyethylene and can take hundreds of years to decompose.

But steps are being taken to reduce the environmental footprint of plastic bags. Use of plastic bags is either restricted or completely banned in over a quarter of the world’s countries.

China, Italy, Bangladesh, South Africa, and parts of Australia have banned plastic bags outright, while municipal bans exist in parts of India, Mexico, Britain, the U.S., and Canada.

Plastaxes – taxes on plastic bags paid by consumers – and new recycling laws have also been brought in to help address the issue.

In February 2016, Walmart Canada began phasing out one-use shopping bags at Canadian Walmart stores. In place of these, customers will be offered discounted reusable bags for 25 cents. But plastic bags will still be offered for five cents in an effort to reduce the number of single-use bags they distribute.

In my neck of the woods (Sidney, British Columbia), the grocery store I frequent doesn’t have plastic grocery bags but they do offer single-use brown paper bags – or, of course, you can use reusable grocery bags or a reusable cardboard box, specifically designed to hold the weight of groceries. My personal preference is a box and several reusable bags.

Although my community is supposedly very environmentally-friendly, I would have to say that, based on my personal observations, the majority of the grocery store customers still choose the single-use brown paper bag over the reusable bag and/or box. And I’m not sure why. Convenience, perhaps?

What about those little produce bags?

However, when it comes to bagging my fruits, veggies and bulk foods, I still find myself reaching for the small clear plastic bags off the roll-dispenser every time I go to the grocery store. So this is an area I’m going to work on improving: remembering to bring back to the store my plastic produce & bulk food baggies so I can reuse them a few times, instead of always getting new ones.

7 Simple ways to reduce the use of shopping bags

1. Use reusable cloth shopping bags (keep them in your vehicle or a place where you’ll remember to use them)

2. Consider using a reusable cardboard box, specifically designed for carrying groceries

3. Consult customer service or send a letter/email to stores to inquire about what they’re doing to reduce the use of plastic bags

4. Assess whether you need to use bags as garbage liners – if you don’t need to use them, then don’t

5. Re-use plastic bags as much as possible

6. Recycle the bags you can’t reuse by taking them back to the grocery store for recycling (or utilizing other plastic bag recycling programs)

7. Avoid unnecessary use by telling the cashier you don’t need a bag for one or two items

Reusable bags are the solution

A sturdy, reusable bag will last for years, and only needs to be used 5 times to have a lower environmental impact than a single-use bag.

It’s not difficult to use a reusable shopping bag… but it is a choice to make it a priority.

The solution to reducing plastic bag waste is literally in the bag: use less bags in the first place. And, if you do have to use one, then be creative in getting multiple uses out of it. And when this isn’t an option, be sure to recycle it.

Pitch Plastic Health Risks

Plastic has been one of the most time, safety and lifesaving inventions of all times. We can find it everywhere today. In fact, I guarantee you, you’re probably using plastic right now (most computers use plastic to keep the weight down).

I’m more concerned with the kitchen plastics, especially the food there. In a hospital, in a car, the plastic you use may save your life, but in the kitchen, it can take your life. How many containers in your kitchen are made of plastic? A few, most, all? If you are like most of us, you’re likely to find plastic in just about every place you look.

Studies have confirmed that the chemicals in plastic can leach into our foods. Ingesting these chemicals is harmful to our bodies. Nowhere is that risk more direct than when the food we eat comes into direct contact with plastic.

It’s not all bad news, however. You don’t need to throw out all the plastic in your kitchen to be safe. Just a few types are bad and replacing them with healthier, safer plastics and glass can help your health.

There are several plastic types. It’s easy to determine the type, since manufacturers need to print the information on the bottom for recycling. Just look for the little triangle with a number inside. This number is the type of the plastic. The plastics with the greatest potential for leaching toxins are #3, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and #7, polycarbonate (PC) or “other.” If you have read more by me, you’ll know I advise people to avoid eating things they can’t identify. Plastic #1, polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) is not as bad, but it leaches toxic materials under higher heat and light conditions.

Plastic #3 is known for leaching phthalates. These have become known in the news lately because of their disastrous effects on men. This chemical group lowers testosterone and decreases sperm counts. It’s also known for damaging the liver and reducing brain function.

Estrogen mimics are known for increasing cancers, obesity and behavioral disorders. It’s found mostly in BPA, or plastic #7. Recently, the FDA finally banned the use of this toxic chemical for children’s cups. A good move, since children are more susceptible to damage than healthy adults. However, if you continue to use this, your risk is still there. Toxins are toxins, regardless of age.

Plastic #1 is intended for short use, an environmentally un-friendly practice. While reusing a thin, plastic water bottle is good for the environment, it just may cause the plastic to break down faster and leach plastic by-products into the water. It also is a good medium for bacteria growth, which happens most often in the hard to clean caps and threads. I recommend opting for safer plastics you can reuse.

Plastic #6 is generally safe; it’s known as Styrofoam. It’s not often used with foods, since it breaks into little pieces easily. But that’s it’s problem. Those small pieces can be inhaled or accidentally swallowed, allowing plastic into your system where it should never be. It’s also a big environmental contaminant, poisoning fish that we then eat.

The majority of plastics used in food prep are safer than these. They include plastics #2, #4 and #5. If you are choosing to use plastic, use these. Just remember to check the bottom of the container to make sure you are getting the right plastic.

It’s actually safer and more environmentally friendly to choose to not use plastics at all. Glass and metal containers have been used for centuries and are very stable. They are very reusable and sustainable. It only takes a few easy changes to remove plastic from your life and improve your health:

· Never heat food in plastic containers. High heat releases chemicals from plastics into your food. This includes using the microwave!

· Always avoid the most hazardous plastics-those marked #3 and #7.

· Choose reusable glass or stainless steel food-storage containers.

While eliminating the most harmful plastics from your life will go a long way toward reducing your chemical intake, recent studies support the case for avoiding plastic altogether whenever possible. Several studies show that the chemicals from all plastics can encourage cancer, obesity, reproductive damage and behavioral problems. Just as we should go back to the way our ancestors ate, we should store our foods like they did, glass and metal or just eat it fresh.

The Benefits Of Getting A Personal Loan

A personal loan is usually not secured. It means collateral does not need to be provided by you when you borrow. The loan is offered to you by the lender on the basis of your credit and qualifiers. You can easily get the approval of loan, if you have a good credit. A lower interest rate can also be offered to you. Visit a financial institution or search online to get a personal loan.

Here is a list of some of the benefits of such a loan.

  • Lower interest rate – If you have good credit, then personal loans with lower interest rates can be availed by you. Around 15% APR on a credit card balance is paid by the people with lower credit card balance. But if you have good credit, you have to pay only 6% APR. While making a big purchase, it is considered as a big difference.
  • Use for many purchases – Your cash can be used by you for making any purchase. A loan of this type can be used even for purchasing a vehicle, starting a business or renovating your house. Restrictions may be placed by other types of loans on the usage of fund. But the conditions of using a personal loan are flexible and can be used for any purchase.
  • Consolidate debt – High interest debt can be consolidated by using a personal loan. Several smaller debts with high interest such as credit cards and student loans can be paid off by using a larger loan. Money on interest can be saved if you consolidate your debt by using this loan. Your debt repayment plan can be managed in a better way by combing several loans in one place.
  • Smooth your cash flow – Your cash flow can be smoothened by using a personal loan. A personal line of credit can be got by you, by using your personal loans. You have to pay a low interest rate in this alternate way of use. An emergency fund doesn’t need to be raised for future. The borrowed amount can be repaid by accessing your line of credit.
  • Boost your credit score – Your credit score is counted depending on your different types of accounts. One type of credit is represented by credit cards. In this case, you can use your credit score to handle your loans. Your score can be boosted slightly by adding instalment loans in your credit report.

Working As a Freelance Writer – Divine Discontent

Doing Business on the Internet is not like it used to be 10 years ago. Not sure if it’s just prevalent locally, or worldwide. But the quest and desire for anonymity provided by the Internet has thrown the “Freelance World” into a tailspin. When faced with clients in today’s market it should become an inspiration to turn the experience into a lesson to be shared rather than a Divine Discontent.

After all Divine Discontent is the grit in the oyster before the pearl. As a Freelance writer one of the goals is to cultivate long term working relationships with clients, which can afford the luxury of doing what you love, writing. It could be said that aspiration has always been to live and work artistically. From the onset any artist should be a great listener. With listening comes experiences that need to be shared with others. Since we are all afforded a place to post these artistic behaviors then allow me to share with you one of these pearls.

An artist has to access creative energy, concepts and inspiration in order to generate, create, and write the idea that wasn’t there before. Committed to the idea that they alone could provide, to leave a mark on the world. Being receptive to something new while honing their craft. It is only then they become more inspired. Priorities become an important factor in this field. As an independent writer one has to respect their craft. Whether it means responding to emails immediately or using the phone, a door should always be open to communication. With that said, neither experience is profitable nor does it make business sense.

Spending an average of 15 hours a week from sending out RFP’s (request for proposals) and submitting bids on potential projects can cut into a writer’s profitability. Adjusting to and accepting certain responsibilities will eventually become easier to balance. This is part of doing business, therefore automating that process in the beginning of your freelance career is highly advised. Yet more times than not when competing in this industry, inevitably writers will face the ugly reality that outsourcing has given rise to and accomplished. Whether you are a buyer or a service provider the competition is fierce or maybe I should say farce. One has to compete with third world countries where they pack a room full of writers churning out copy for $1.50. Is it a smart decision then to invest that much time in “maybe clients” It can be, if you are bidding on your area of expertise. First rule don’t bid on projects because you want to build an online or monthly portfolio. You will spend a lot of wasted time in the process. Focus on who you are dealing with, are they a legitimate company. This cloak and dagger most buyers play on the Internet is almost comical. Here are some basic things to do at the beginning of your quest for that particular project.

o Engage the potential client with email or a phone call in order to assess what sort of client they are.

o Are they emailing you back a response in an acceptable time frame?

o Do they respect your time?

o Do they keep telling you to call them back at another time?

o Are they clear about their expectations? Let me assure you if you don’t answer yes to those questions then move on. You will be dealing with more of a headache than a happy experience. After all the reason I work as a freelancer is simple. I want to generate an income from my home. I want to spend time with my family and friends.

I do not want to work for Corporate America, been there done that. People who know me will tell you, I don’t belong in Corporate America. I am too creative and my assertive personality to be a yes sir or yes m’am employee is just not going to go over well. The key to loving how you live is knowing what you truly love. It should be straightforward, this knowing what we love. But it seldom is. After decades of letting other people influence us-the media, the magazines, our mothers, and our friends-we’re going to have to go cold turkey. The only opinion that counts from now on is your own.

Once you have secured the project protect yourself. I cannot stress enough how this can either make the experience enjoyable or a complete and utter nightmare. Protecting yourself is going to add value to your time. Have a contract and have a time frame. Write it all down, including something as simple as how many revisions. Have the client fax you a copy after they have signed it. This will not only prove you as a professional but it will also make it VERY CLEAR to the client when they start to hum and haw about what they expect. Getting a generic contract is easy, you can Google a search that will provide you with a plethora of “free contracts”.

Add your logo to the template and always include a phone number and an easy way to contact you if there are any questions. In this country business are popping up all over the Internet. Unless you are familiar with the business or have worked with them in the past I can assure you most are far from ethical, polite, or professional. Most hide behind email and big websites. They are nothing more than weasels, little rats flying at the speed of sound trying to sell their books or fast talk. Most will boast about how many employees they have and how many years they have been in business. Like I am impressed. If you have that many people on board and you are such a big shot why in the world are you dealing with a writer? I am sure they have better things to do like managing their multi billion dollar dream. Maybe it’s too much Viagra, and it has made the wrong head hard. Most who say they are CEO’s or have a snappy email signature are nothing more than want to be CEO’s.

They have illusions of grandeur and live in a dream world of who they truly are. Listen, maybe they should have better Administrative Assistants or maybe they should mention from the onset that they lack certain business qualities. You may be wondering what I am gripping about let me clear. If you are a writer and reading this let me make a suggestion spend as little time with flaky potential clients as possible. The way one can usually tell when this may be a flaky client is when they don’t respond to your email after they made a big deal out of their needs. The second reason is to help and inform the writers out there with information that is readily available to you. Private investigators are writers best friends. It’s not going to come cheap, however if you contracted a huge project and your clients have gone in communication then contact an investigator and they will find them.

These are some things you should do.

o Contact your local Better Business Bureau.

o Get as much information on this client as you can

o Send them a demand letter for payment or outline all the people you will involve.

o Send all documentation to you Attorney General.

o Always upload your work online to your web server.

o Leave it online until you are paid.

o Unless you sign a W.F.H. (work for hire) contract it’s yours to resell if you want. (I would suggest re-writing it just so you are not cheap and tawdry.)
